Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week 22
August 28, 2017 | Matt Terelle
Welcome to Week 22 of the MLB season. Today we will take a look at the waiver wire in your fantasy baseball league and make recommendations based on MLB risers. For this series, I will be using ownership percentages from Yahoo! leagues. Generally speaking, I will be looking for players who are less than 50% owned, but there are times where I may target someone who is slightly over the ownership threshold if he is a must-own in leagues.
Please note, all statistics and ownership percentages are from Monday, August 28. Let’s get started!
Dinelson Lamet (SD) – 39% owned
Lamet continues to pitch extremely well in his rookie season. The 25-year-old right-hander is fresh off a dominant performance against the Marlins in which he held them to one run over six innings while striking out five. Lamet has solid strikeout upside, punching out 105 batters in 86 innings of work. He should be owned in all leagues at this point based on his strong pitching, plus he plays his home games at Petco Park, one of the best pitcher’s venues in all of baseball. He draws a tough assignment against the Dodgers in his next start, but he will be at home for that outing. He’s earned enough rope that I’m still planning on using him for that start.
Christian Vazquez (BOS) – 12% owned
Vazquez doesn’t play every day, but he continues to produce excellent offensive numbers when he’s in the starting lineup. The 27-year-old backstop has been swinging a hot bat lately, posting a .396 average, two homers, 12 runs, seven RBI, and two stolen bases over the past 30 days. That’s production worth chasing, even if he is only playing in half of Boston’s games.
Howie Kendrick (WAS) – 37% owned
Kendrick has been on fire since joining the Nationals and his multi-position eligibility makes him an especially useful player in fantasy. In 26 games with Washington, Kendrick is slashing .341/.374/.600 with five homers, 11 runs, 18 RBI, and two steals. Yahoo! allows you to deploy him at 1B, 2B, 3B, and OF.
Kolten Wong (STL) – 25% owned
Wong remains the top second base pickup this week. He went on a mini power surge over the past week, blasting two homers to double his season total. Of course, power numbers aren’t the reason to pursue Wong. Despite his lack of power, Wong is an asset in batting average and runs and his 39 RBI in 288 at-bats is solid. He is much lower owned than he should be.
Jorge Polanco (MIN) – 34% owned
Polanco has been red hot at the plate over the past month, even though he’s flown under the radar a bit. The 24-year-old is batting .378 with four homers, 12 runs, 20 RBI, and three steals over the past 30 days. He also holds eligibility at 2B and 3B. Several Twins hitters have heated up of late, which should help Polanco’s production.
Marcus Semien (OAK) – 25% owned
Semien is putting up modest numbers in a season which saw him lose a large chunk of games due to an injured wrist. He’s been back in the fold for just under two months now and is hitting .326 over the past two weeks. He has only five homers on the season, but Semien showed that he has a nice power aspect to his game, blasting 27 long balls in 2016.
Trey Mancini (BAL) – 52% owned
Mancini has been on fire over the past week, batting .478 with one homer, four runs, and eight RBI. The young power hitter is enjoying a breakout season this season, hitting .293 with 22 homers, 70 RBI, and 52 runs. He’s available in just under half of Yahoo! leagues, making him a great target as a fourth outfielder.
Matt Joyce (OAK) – 4% owned
Joyce is more for deeper leagues and AL-only formats, but what he’s done at the plate over the past month cannot be ignored. The veteran outfielder is hitting .286 with six homers, 18 runs, 16 RBI, and two steals over the past 30 days. He has 19 round-trippers overall and is worth a look if you need to add some power to your roster.
Thanks for reading, good luck this week!
