Ace In The Hole: Top DraftKings Pitcher Plays

Welcome to Ace In The Hole! During this segment, I will take you through all the best pitching options each day for the entire MLB season. By breaking down our pitching options into tiers, it should help you, the reader, in deciding on your DraftKings’ lineup. Specifically, I will be looking into ballpark factors, K rates, matchup factors, weather, and more in making my selections. Anyway, enough of the talk. Let’s get down to business!

Top-Tier:

Francisco Liriano (vs CHC, $8,700) – Francisco Liriano is the best pitching option of the night. He isn’t quite the most expensive, but definitely part of the “Top-Tier” tonight. He faces the Chicago Cubs, who strikeout a lot more than most teams in the league. They are a streaky hitting team, so if they don’t get it rolling early, they probably won’t get it rolling at all. Liriano has been very consistent so far this season, giving up only three earned runs in his first two starts combined. He faced the Detroit Tigers last game and shut them down, so the Cubs definitely do not scare me tonight.

Mike Fiers (vs CIN, $8,400) – Mike Fiers has not been pitching all that great so far this season. He lost both games he started and has an ERA of over five, which is pretty pathetic. However, he does get a half-decent matchup against the Reds, who aren’t hitting very well to start the season. He is a strikeout pitcher, so he will rely on that to pick up his fantasy points. If he can keep the Reds under three runs, and get his strikeout pitch working, he should be in for a good night.

Mid-Tier:

Jon Niese (vs ATL, $7,500) – Jonathan Niese’s 1.59 ERA is almost laughable at this point in the season because he is not that great of a pitcher. He is sub-par at best, but he has been hot to start his 2015 campaign. The Atlanta Braves aren’t anything special in the hitting department, and the Mets have been hitting the ball very effectively in their last couple of games. Jon Niese should pick up the win, and if he continues to pitch like he has been, give up less than two or three runs in around six or seven innings of work.

Wade Miley (at TB, $6,900) – The Boston Red Sox take on the Tampa Bay Rays tonight, who struggle to hit the ball. Wade Miley looked good in his first start of the season against the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium. His five and one-third innings pitched and two earned runs was pretty impressive based on his matchup and ballpark factor ratings. However, in his second start of the season, he was blasted for seven earned runs in two and one-third innings pitched against the Washington Nationals. Due to his inconsistency, I would save Miley for GPP games, but he should be effective tonight against the Rays.

Low-Tier:

Taijuan Walker (vs HOU, $6,700) – Taijuan has yet to score in the positives this season, as far as fantasy points are concerned. In his previous two games combined, he has given up a total of fourteen earned runs, which is flat out unbelievable. The Mariners apparently still have enough confidence in him to start him tonight against the Astros. The only reason the struggling righty is on this recommendation list is because of his matchup. The Astros are atrocious and could kick start Walker’s season tonight. Needless to say, avoid him in cash games.

Nick Martinez (at ARI, $5,300) – Nick Martinez has yet to give up an earned run, and he has seen fourteen innings of work so far this season. He is not striking a lot of batters out (only six in his last two starts combined), but he is getting the job done for fantasy purposes. The Arizona Diamondbacks do not hit the ball all that great, and Martinez should continue to stay hot tonight. For $5,300, you do not get much better.
