Daily Fantasy GPP Plays – Tuesday, August 16th
August 16, 2016 | Jason Bales
Welcome to Daily Fantasy GPP Plays. This title should be pretty self-explanatory, as this article will focus on a two or three tournament-style pitchers and four or five tournament-style hitters. Instead of looking for consistency, we will be looking for players with very high upside. Do not use any of these recommendations in 50/50 contests, as they will all be very risky. Let’s get down to it!
Jaime Garcia (at HOU, $9,300)
Jaime Garcia gets a great matchup tonight against the strikeout-prone Houston Astros’ offense, and he should be able to take advantage of that. Over his last two starts, he has 21.8 and 41.6 fantasy points, proving that the upside and potential are both there. On the season, the St. Louis Cardinals’ left-hander has a 3.93 ERA, 9-8 record, and 114 strikeouts over 137.1 innings pitched. His low-ish K-rate has hurt his fantasy upside through the first half of the season, but with 11 strikeouts in eight innings two games ago, he may have developed a strikeout pitch. Even if he doesn’t strikeout a lot of batters tonight, if the Houston Astros are not hitting home runs or extra base hits, they are not scoring. Garcia should be able to limit that and at least hit value tonight.
Ervin Santana (at ATL, $9,000)
Ervin Santana has been pitching extremely well of recent for the Minnesota Twins. On the season, he currently has a 3.62 ERA, 5-9 record, and 93 strikeouts over 126.2 innings pitched. Despite only getting into the seventh inning of work in two of his last three starts, he has over 20 fantasy points in all of those starts. Against the Atlanta Braves, three games ago, he pitched nine innings, allowed only two runs, and struck out five batters. If he can get a couple more batters to miss the ball with two strikes on them tonight, he will be in great shape. Santana, for his price tag, is a steal. Use him in both 50/50 contests and tournaments until he puts up a dud.
Tucker Barnhart (vs MIA, $3,700)
Tucker Barnhart gets a great matchup tonight against the Miami Marlins and Jose Urena. At home this season, Barnhart is hitting over .300 with over six fantasy points per game on average, which is great considering he is in Cincinnati tonight. He has six home runs on the season, five of them coming at home. In his last 10 games, he is hitting over .350 with one home run, three RBIs, and four walks. His price tag is reasonable, and it is difficult to find a reasonable priced catcher with good upside. Use him in tournaments and 50/50 contests tonight.
Matt Duffy (vs SD, $3,500)
Matt Duffy has been hitting the ball well since getting traded to the Tampa Bay Rays, so he is definitely in play tonight against the San Diego Padres and Edwin Jackson. Jackson pitched well in two straight games now, but that will likely not turn into a trend. In his last 10 games, Duffy is hitting over .350 with eight fantasy points per game on average. He is not much of a power hitter, but he can drive in runs if given the opportunity. Fire him up in all formats tonight.
Aaron Judge (vs TOR, $2,700)
Aaron Judge gets a tough matchup tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays and Marco Estrada. Estrada has been great all season, but he is pitching in New York against the Yankees, and Judge’s price tag is just too low to pass on him. The minor league stud has been up in the majors for three games, posting 19, 16, and 12 fantasy points in those games. He has five hits in 10 at-bats, proving that he is well worth the call-up. To top it all off, he already has two home runs and three RBIs. For $2,700, the upside just does not get any better. Use him in all tournament lineups.
