MLB DFS Value Plays: April 28
April 28, 2016 | Matt Terelle
Yesterday, knuckleballer Steven Wright was the latest pitcher to shut down the Braves while the Pirates and Rockies combined to score 17 runs on 33 hits in 12 innings.
Brandon Belt drove in five runs to help down the Padres and the Phillies beat Washington for the second straight game.
These are some of my favorite value plays for today across DraftKings and FanDuel. On most days I will try to outline one pitcher and four hitters who should be excellent values for the upcoming slate. Please note there isn’t a specific price cut off, instead, I will try to highlight players who should outperform their prices on a given day. Let’s get to today’s values.
Tanner Roark (P) – Washington Nationals
vs. Philadelphia Phillies
$7,800 DraftKings, $8,200 FanDuel
Roark is coming off the best start of his career, striking out 15 batters while shutting out the Twins over seven innings. While he’s not likely to hit 15 strikeouts again, he gets a favorable matchup with a Phillies offense that is not all that dangerous. Philadelphia, when facing right-handed pitching, is 21st in the league in both wOBA and ISO. Roark heads into this start as the favorite and should be able to limit Philadelphia’s offense.
Matt Carpenter (3B) – St. Louis Cardinals
@ Arizona Diamondbacks
$4,400 DK, $4,100 FD
Carpenter, and the rest of the St. Louis left-handed bats, have a dream matchup with Rubby De La Rosa in hitter-friendly Chase Field tonight. De La Rosa really struggles to get left-handers out, allowing them a .377 wOBA and a .211 ISO over his career. Carpenter is just the 20th most expensive batter on DraftKings, yet he has a good chance at being the highest scoring hitter today.
David Freese (3B) – Pittsburgh Pirates
@ Colorado Rockies
$3,900 DK, $3,500 FD
Freese has been hitting well over the past four games, going 6-for-20 with one home run, four RBI, and four runs scored. He’s still priced reasonably and is a cheap way to get some exposure to Coors without breaking the bank. Normally batting in the three spot, look for his run producing opportunities to continue today.
Victor Martinez (C/1B) – Detroit Tigers
vs. Oakland A’s
DK $3,500, FD $2,900
Martinez has really started to heat up at the plate. Over the last week, he is batting .360 with two home runs, six RBI, and three runs scored. As long as the veteran is healthy, he’s proving that he’s still an elite hitter. Look for Martinez to remain hot today as Oakland sends youngster Chris Bassitt to the mound.
Joey Rickard (OF) – Baltimore Orioles
vs. Chicago White Sox
DK $3,300, FD $2,500
Rickard had been struggling at the plate since the weekend, but he hit a three-run home run yesterday to break the slump. The Baltimore right-handed hitters have a great matchup with John Danks today. Danks, over his career, has struggled to get right-handed batters out and has been extremely home run prone. Look for a big game from the O’s lineup tonight.
