Position eligibility and ownership percentages are for Yahoo leagues.
Evan Gattis, C/OF (68%): After offseason hernia surgery and a poor April, Gattis has responded with a 122 wRC+ since the beginning of May. His .226 ISO matches his career number, and his exit velocity is 1.2 mph higher than in 2015; any concerns over Gattis’ surgery have been quelled. His 25 home run ability at the fantasy catcher position makes him a must-own.
Michael Fulmer, SP (47%): Late April saw the debut of three top pitching prospects: Michal Fulmer, Sean Manaea, and Jose Berrios. While not as highly touted as the latter two, Fulmer is the only one that has pitched remotely well. He currently holds a 3.24 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 41.2 innings, and his K-BB% is well above league average at 17.9%. Fulmer is a jack-of-all-trades pitcher, and the lack of a distinct weakness gives him a higher floor than both Manaea and Berrios. Ostensibly Fulmer’s worst pitch, his changeup, has been more than just a show-me pitch, as he’s throwing it 13.9% of the time and is generating an above-average 17.9% swinging strikes with it. Steamer’s rest-of-season projection of a 3.92 ERA with 8.13 K/9 is realistic, and those numbers make Fulmer a solid add in most formats.
Hyun-soo Kim, OF (8%): Hopefully you had the bench slots to stash Kim after my May 8th recommendation, because he’s batting .385 since replacing Joey Rickard in the lineup 11 days ago. While that batting average is obviously inflated, Kim’s quality plate discipline will keep his average in the .270-.290 range. Given 400 plate appearances, he should provide a .285/.350/.430 line with 12 home runs and a few steals. That’s a stat line worth owning in all but the shallowest of leagues.
Michael Bourn, OF (1%): Bourn has been in the starting lineup for 11 of Arizona’s last 19 games, and he has a 116 wRC+ and 3 steals in that span. I expect the stolen bases to increase as he breaks into Arizona’s enigmatic outfield and starts more frequently. There’s not much else I can say about Bourn; pick him up if you need cheap speed.
